Research interests
Within our group, Prof. A. Baratoff's interest centers on the interpretation of dynamic AFM measurements in UHV. More precisely, mechanisms leading to atomic-scale variations in energy dissipation and electrostatic interactions under near-contact conditions, and to the load dependence and efficient reduction of friction in atomic-size contacts, are investigated using phenomenological as well as atomistic models.
A joint project with Prof. H.-J. Hug (EMPA, Dübendorf) deals with optomechanical effects of incident light in interferometrically-sensed high-Q cantilevers and their use for efficient mode cooling and ultrasensitive dissipation measurements.
Most of this work is done in collaboration with PhD students and former colleagues, particular attention being given to experimentalists interested în performing model computations and to theorists eager to interpret in-house measurements.
